LANE WIDTH - EURO INTERNATIONAL

Euro-International VS North American

In North America, typical lane widths on roadways range from 10 to 12 feet, with 12 feet being common for high-speed, high-volume roads. Some urban areas may consider narrower lanes, like 9-10 feet, while others, especially for truck or transit routes, might utilize 11-foot lanes. 

Elaboration:

12-foot lanes:

This is the standard lane width for many US and state highways, particularly on the Interstate Highway System. 

10-11 foot lanes:

The NACTO Urban Street Design Guide suggests that 10-foot lanes are appropriate for urban areas and may discourage speeding. Some designated truck or transit routes may use 11-foot lanes, and 11-foot lanes should not be used in urban areas as they can encourage speeding. 

Narrower lanes:

In certain cases, particularly when combined with turn lanes, narrower lanes of 9-9.5 feet can be effective. Some studies even suggest that 9-foot lanes can be safer in some situations. 

European Standards:

It's worth noting that European standards generally have narrower lanes, with a minimum of 7-8 feet.
