Dropping the Flies:

Small twin-engine airplanes are used to drop the sterile flies over the designated areas, often marked with a unique purple dye for identification, as noted by SFGATE. 

Preventing Wild Flies from Reproducing:

The released sterile male flies compete with wild male flies for mating with wild female flies, thus preventing wild Medfly populations from growing and spreading, as described in a YouTube video. 

Areas Targeted:

LAist reported that the program targets areas in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties, among others, where Medflies have been detected or are at risk of spreading. 

Scale of the Program:

The program involves dropping millions of sterile male fruit flies weekly, as reported by Smithsonian Magazine and SFGATE.

This method helps to control the spread of invasive fruit flies, which can cause significant damage to crops, and has been used in California for many years.
